A Homeschool Field Trip on the Sunrail

Our family took a trip on the new Sunrail train. Read about our day on this field trip.

We've had a most busy week.

We spent an afternoon at the library and park. On Tuesday, Lorelai and I were hanging out in downtown DeLand for an afternoon and went grocery shopping the next.

Then came Thursday.

Oh, Thursday was quite the day! This was the day we joined up with one of our homeschool groups for a field trip on the brand new Sunrail.

We took the train downtown Winter Park with our homeschool group. The girls were so excited to ride a train!

Once we were in Winter Park, the children played in the park in front of the station where Lorelai made a new friend. Little Miss Nature Scientist is seen here logging her finds in the park.

Two of my grown children met up with us in the afternoon. We walked over to Starbucks. (Yeah.. I had to have my coffee fix.)

After a packed lunch picnic, we visited an ice cream shop.

We were going to catch the train up to next station where the kids could play at a large playground, but the train was delayed. And delayed. And delayed.

You see, right now the Sunrail is free.

There are people riding it who will never use it once the rates take effect. (Try 10,000 people on the the opening day.). Once the rates kick in, mostly commuters will use the train. I think it will save them time and money commuting. I'd use it if I was out in the work field. While it was a good marketing idea to give two weeks of free rides as the grand opening, the system has been overwhelmed causing delays.

We knew that. We expected it.

After waiting for over an hour for a train that never came, we decided we were taking the next train, no matter where it went. At 3:30 p.m., we caught the south train, rode it to the furthest end of Orlando and back to our original location. The teens were exhausted. Every one of them fell asleep on the ride back. That Florida heat will do that to ya'.

We enjoyed each other during the delay and smiled right through it.
It wasn't about the timeliness. It was about the adventure. And boy was it an adventure! It was a very long, hot day but the children had so much fun playing with each other and the moms were able to get together for some laughs.

And my daughters had their first train ride.

I am participating in Collage Friday and the Weekly Wrap-Up.
