Things I didn't expect when I began homeschooling.

The benefits of homeschooling cannot be overstated.

There are obvious benefits such as individualized learning and plenty of one-on-one time. I've found there are plenty of unexpected benefits as well.

10 Things You Should Know About Aspies

Aspie is a nickname of sorts for someone who has Aspergers Syndrome. Asperger's is a high functioning form of autism.

Like all forms, it's on a spectrum.

Some aspies are higher functioning than others. The higher-functioning, the fewer symptoms exist in that person.

Our Family's 10 Favorite Southern Foods

We're Southern. There's just no two ways about that. Whether our diets are geared around special needs, vegetarianism or a particular fondness for a type of cuisine, when all is said and done, we're southern people who eat southern foods.

I use to write a Southern Cooking blog but found I lacked time and inclination to maintain it. (Apparently I love eating it far more than blogging about it.)

For this week only, I am undeleting the blog so that you can get the recipes for some of these.

Today, the iHomeschool Network bloggers are writing about what makes them happy or makes their day. I wasn't sure what I was going to write but yesterday was simply inspiring. It was one of those days that brings me great joy. In no particular order, here are.....

10 Things That Make This Mama Happy

1. Nature - This can mean hiking or taking a nature walk. As long as I'm outside, I'm happy. Nature eases anxieties, leads to discoveries, and helps us to understand our Creator a little better.

Not often can I say a book has changed my life. I love reading and over the years have read countless books on all sorts of subjects. When I was younger, I read mostly parenting books.

I haven't read any of those in many years now. As I've grown older and more experienced at life, I've grown to like myself and not feel I need "experts" to tell me what to do. Most of those books only served to make me feel like I wasn't a good-enough parent anyway. And traveling from one expert's opinion to another only served to confuse me.

There were some books, however, that made a difference for me. In chronological order of life-changing effect are...

10 things this homeschool mom has been taught by using the Charlotte Mason method of education.

One of the surprising things about being a home educator is how much we, the parents, learn. Of course we learn some new things while participating in studies with our children, but we learn so much more than that.

We learn lessons about homeschooling. We learn about our children. We learn about ourselves.

10 Things Charlotte Mason Homeschooling Has Taught Me About Myself

1. I love hiking and camping. I never did either as a kid. As a young mother in my 20s, I scoffed at the idea when my husband suggested these things.

What? Me? Tents and bears and snakes and dirt? Are you crazy?

Charlotte Mason's insistence that nature is a great teacher led me out of doors. Nature walks became hiking trips. Hiking trips became camping trips.

As it turns out, I love doing both!
