It’s important to be able to recognize the physical signs of stress.
As a single, working mom, raising special needs kids, I experience a variety of stresses. I'm sure you, too, experience stresses unique to your lifestyle.
Below are 10 of the top signs to be on the lookout for so that you can stop stress in its tracks before your body suffers.
Insomnia - When you can’t fall asleep or stay asleep, this could be a sign that there are some stress going on in your life. Getting your mind to slow down can be tricky, but it’s essential to getting good rest.
Headaches - There are many different types of headaches. If you're experiencing tension headaches, you may need to reduce some of the stress in your life.
Upset stomach - When nothing stays down, you have frequent heartburn, and life has been throwing you curve balls all at the same time, look out, because it’s probably the stress.
Itchy skin - If unexplained rashes and dry patches show up on your skin for no good reason, then think about what’s been going on around you and maybe work or home is a little crazy right now. (I have eczema outbreaks when I am stress. It's something to consider.)
Weight gain/loss - If you notice your jeans are a little snug, or even if they seem a little loose, then perhaps you are under a little too much stress at the moment.
Frequent urination - If you find yourself running to the bathroom a lot more often throughout your days (and nights!), take a personal inventory of what’s going on in those days of yours and see if your stress levels are a tad high. Frequent urination is tall tell sign of stress.
Forgetfulness - A not so often talked about or diagnosed sign of physical sign of stress is forgetfulness or disorganization. Even a state of confusion can be a huge sign and should be checked out by your doctor as soon as you can.
Aches and pains - If you are suddenly experiencing unusual aches, pains, and tension in your body, this is definitely a common sign of stress.
Fatigue and depression - Stress can leave you feeling tired, stripping away your desire to do things you normally enjoy.
Anxiety - Look out for increased worry and anxiety when it comes to signs of higher stress times in your life. If you are feeling guilty, or even having a lot of negative emotions over anything that may be going on, just know that your daily anxiety will increase and cause physical symptoms.
(Disclaimer: Many of these signs can also be symptoms of other issues. Check with your healthcare provider to rule out any underlying illnesses.)
